It's highly likely that 10 different chefs could show you 10 different ways of making a Bolognese sauce… and in the end there would be a huge argument about which of these recipes is the original Italian one!

I don't want to compete with these recipes here. Today I'm sharing with you my everyday standard recipe for Bolognese, without any claim to authenticity. However, this sauce is not only suitable for classic pasta dishes. It is also the perfect base for lasagne, gives pasta bakes a hearty note and even tastes fantastic as a pizza topping!

Therefore, every (amateur) cook should have a good Bolognese recipe up their sleeve! If you don't have much experience in the kitchen, this is an easy recipe to learn some basics and add another sure-fire recipe to your growing list of dishes you've already mastered!

Bolognese sauce – an Italian classic

In Italy, Bolognese sauce is traditionally made with minced meat, onions, carrots, celery and tomatoes. In some classic recipes, the minced meat is also deglazed with red wine. Spices such as oregano, basil and bay leaves provide the typical, hearty aroma. In Italy, the sauce is usually served with fresh tagliatelle or spaghetti and sprinkled with parmesan. On your next trip to Italy, I can only recommend you to indulge in this culinary delight.

Quick and easy: your everyday sure-fire Bolognese sauce

Even though the classic Bolognese often simmers for several hours, there is a quicker version for everyday use. Simply sauté onions and garlic, add minced meat, deglaze with tomato passata and season with Italian herbs, salt and pepper. In just 15 minutes you will have a delicious sauce that goes perfectly with spaghetti or fusilli! And that's just enough time to put water on the boil and cook the pasta!

Are you now craving some Bolognese sauce? If so, I wish you great success and I am very curious to hear how you liked my recipe. Feel free to write me a comment or ask questions if you are unsure about anything!

Bolognese Sauce

Bolognese sauce is a classic that is used in many other dishes. My recipe is neither authentic nor originally Italian, but just quick, easy and delicious! You can cook this Bolognese sauce in no time (even on your lunch break when working remotely) and enjoy it as Spaghetti Bolognese, for example!

Ingredients

Instructions:

  1. First, dice the onion finely and prepare the garlic clove.

  1. Put the olive oil in a frying pan and heat it carefully. As soon as it is hot enough (small bubbles will form on your wooden spatula), add the minced meat and fry it well. Season it with salt and pepper.

  1. Sometimes a lot of water is released when frying minced meat. Let it boil away before adding the onions and two teaspoons of Italian seasoning to the minced meat.

  1. When the onion turned translucent, you can use a garlic press* to add the clove of garlic (see rermarks for the garlic press*) and mix it all well. Then deglaze the Bolognese sauce with tomato passata. Add a little bit of water, too. You can rinse out the bottle or the packaging of the tomato passata when adding water.

  1. Next, add the sugar and let the Bolognese sauce simmer, covered, for about 5 minutes.

  1. Finally, add the remaining herbs and season the Bolognese sauce to taste with salt and pepper.
