A good cheeseburger doesn't need much – just the right ingredients and a little attention to detail. For me, this smash cheeseburger is the perfect combination of crispy, roasted flavors, juicy beef, and melted cheese, nestled in a homemade bun. When the cheese slowly melts and blends with the freshly cooked patty, that's the moment you know: it doesn't really need anything more. Served with crispy sweet potato fries, it becomes a true comfort food – completely homemade and bursting with flavor.

Inspiration for this Smash Cheeseburger Recipe

Several years ago I discovered the YouTube Channel Binging with Babish ! I discovered him and watched some videos and recipes. His method of making cheeseburgers, in particular, stuck with me, so I had to try it myself at the next opportunity, and I haven't done it any other way since! His method is both simple (it couldn't be easier!) and incredibly flavorful; the developed roasting flavor results in an unbelievable taste! So, for inspiration, definitely check out this Smash Cheeseburger Video as well. It also deals in more detail with the selection of meat, and he makes his own minced meat.

Basic Recipes for these Smash Cheeseburgers

Some of the ingredients or side dishes in this recipe are recipes I've already shared with you. These are the Fluffy 100 % Whole Wheat Grain Burger Buns with Sourdough and the Crispy Homemade Oven-Baked Sweet Potato Fries. Of course, you could make life easier for yourself and buy both the burger buns and the sweet potato fries directly from the store… But I doubt it will taste as good as mine!

  • Fluffy 100 % Wholewheat Seeded Burger Buns with Sourdough: Moist and soft burger buns made from 100% whole wheat flour, refined with sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, and flax seeds. The use of sourdough and a long fermentation process give them an intense aroma and make them exceptionally digestible. Ideal for hearty burgers where flavor and firmness are key.
  • Crispy Homemade Oven Sweet Potato Fries: These crispy oven-baked sweet potato fries are achieved with a simple yet effective trick: After the first ten minutes of baking, briefly open the oven door and then leave it slightly ajar to allow the moist air to escape – this makes the fries wonderfully crispy. Prepared with (coconut) oil, salt, and pepper, they are particularly well-suited for the luteal phase and make an uncomplicated, satisfying side dish or snack option.

Homemade Smash Cheeseburger with a Pure Beef Patty

This classic cheeseburger is made with a juicy beef smash burger patty and homemade burger buns. The bottom bun is spread with ketchup, topped with the patty, pickle, and cheese, and then briefly toasted with the top bun so the cheese melts and the bun becomes slightly crispy. Fresh tomatoes, lettuce, and mustard complete the burger, which is best served with homemade sweet potato fries and tahini.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Cut the burger bun in halves and form the ground beef into a ball that is as compact as possible.

  1. Heat oil in a pan and then add the meatball. Immediately flatten it with a suitable spatula.

The patty should look significantly larger than the burger bun at this stage, as it will shrink considerably during cooking.
  1. Season the burger patty with salt and pepper (on one side only) and turn it over after a few minutes. Let it cook thoroughly on both sides.

  1. In the meantime, you can prepare the other ingredients. Slice a pickle and the tomatoes, and get the cheese and lettuce leaf ready.

  1. Now spread ketchup on the bottom half of the burger bun and place the beef patty, pickle slices, and cheese on top. Bake the stacked bottom half and the empty top half in the oven for 5 minutes at 350 °F (180 °C) using the conventional oven setting (top and bottom heat).

  1. Finally, all you need to do is assemble the burger! Continue topping the bottom half with tomato slices and lettuce. Spread mustard on the top half and use it to close the burger.

  1. Serve and enjoy!
