You can make so many delicious variations of rice pudding! There are the two classics: with applesauce and cinnamon sugar or with hot cherries. Apart from that, there are yummy variations on the chocolate or vanilla side with all kinds of fruit. As an alternative, you can also use fat reduced coconut milk and top your rice pudding with exotic fruits. Feel free to try any other variation! You can happily use this recipe as a basis and go from there!

My favorite way to make rice pudding is in the microwave. There are several pros: you can't burn the rice pudding and you don't have to stand by and stir during the cooking time. However, not everybody has a microwave or trusts the technology, that's why you will also find instructions on how to cook rice pudding on the stove in a sauce pan. To success and enjoy!

Ingredients

How it is done:

Microwave Cooking Instructions

  1. Mix ingredients

Take a bigger microwave safe container (see remarks) or jar (with a lid) and mix the milk and rice.

  2. Boil up the rice pudding

Put the container with the lid on (see remarks) in the microwave and choose the highest microwave setting. My microwave's highest setting is 900 Watt and this takes me about 4.5 - 5 minutes. You should keep an eye on your rice pudding, because milk rises and easily spills when heated up. As soon as your milk rises up, you let it cook for another 30 seconds with short interruptions to avoid spilling.

Then you take out your container and stir it with a little whisk.

  3. Simmer rice pudding

The rice pudding needs about 20-30 more minutes to simmer without any lid on at about 300 Watt (I choose 30 % of 900 Watt). You should stir the rice pudding every 10 minutes in between with a little whisk.

At that it is likely that some skin formed on the surface of your rice pudding. Don't you worry, you just stir it and mix it in with the rice pudding. You can then enjoy it without any skin!

Stovetop Instructions

  1. Mix ingredients

Add milk and rice to a sauce pan. Make sure that your sauce pan heats milk well or you best use a milk pot.

  2. Boil up the rice pudding

Put the sauce pan on the stove on high heat. Bring the rice pudding to a boil while stirring constantly.

  3. Simmer rice pudding

Let the rice pudding simmer on low to medium heat for about 20-30 minutes. The rice pudding is done when all of the milk is absorbed and the rice grains have softened! You should constantly stir your rice pudding for it not to burn.
